Ercol Windsor Chair & Footstool – Nursery Chair

This little beauty is another of our projects for our own home. This chair is now in our new nursery… imminently awaiting the arrival of our baby (due sometime this week).

The chair is from the 1980’s so it’s not as vintage as the other Ercol Windsor chairs we have refurbished.  The original pink dralon cushion covers were a little drab – so they had to go! The pirelli webbing was still in good condition so we decided not to replace that.

We polished up the dark wood frame as it was also in good condition, with only slight wear to the arms and legs.

We recovered the cushions and footstool in a vibrant and soft tangerine linen, using a top stitch to give the overall project a slightly more contemporary look.

The chair is amazingly comfortable – especially when used with the footstool. Another lovingly restored piece which will be enjoyed by our little one for many years to come!

We hope you like!

2 Seater Sofa Project: The After Photos!

As promised, here are the pictures of our 2 seater sofa revamp!

Long gone are the dirty green covers and Queen Anne style feet!

We reupholstered the whole sofa in a light cream linen-look polyester fabric (washable at 30 degrees as we have a baby on the way!), and added 3 buttons to the back to add interest. We added a bandage arm detail to the wings and only piped the outside edges to help bring this sofa up-to-date!

We completed the look with some bespoke, turned wooden feet, finished in a distressed black varnish. We think the transformation is rather marvellous!

It’s really comfortable and fits superbly in our bay window.

We hope you like the project!

Project: 2 Seater Sofa

We know you may be thinking ‘What on earth is that!!!?’

However, we saw something very different. Underneath that dirty green fabric we saw a beautiful 2 seater wing sofa just waiting to be transformed.

This project is actually something we purchased for our own home – to go in a bay window.

It’s already had its makeover and is waiting to be photographed this weekend! …So, check back next week to find out if you like the Florrie+Bill overhaul!

Project of the Week! Mr & Mrs Smithers Chairs

The ‘Mr & Mrs Smithers’ – affectionately named after some good friends of ours who kindly gave them to us as a wedding project-present last year!

These wooden armchairs probably date from the 60′s or 70′s. There are no manufacturers mark on these, though the arms and top back rail have an Ercol-esque feel to them. They have solid hardwood frames with lovely wishbone detailing to the arms and back. The frames are screwed and dowelled, unmistakably British – they look like a mixture of Beech and steam bent Elm, popularly used by Ercol.

The chairs were originally varnished in a rather nasty dark brown and the original cushions were a faded crushed sage green velour.

This restoration involved completely hand sanding the frames, and priming and spraying in a Stone Grey colour furniture paint.

The seat platforms have coil sprung suspension, but we have added brand new interior fillings in the seat and back cushions to make them comfy and supportive once more. The cushions were reupholstered in a contemporary Grey Linen look fabric, with contrasting Lime Green piping. The contrast piped seat and back cushions, also feature contrast buttons. All cushions are reversible so can be shown as plain grey instead. Each chair also comes with a fabulous  Paisley print 20″ down filled scatter cushion as pictured.

Either on their own, or as a pair they will make a great statement in any room.

…We are really pleased with how these chairs have turned out, we just wish we knew who made them?!

All our chairs are reupholstered to comply with current fire regulations.

Project of the Week! – ‘Benchairs’ Dining Chairs

We have 4 ‘Benchairs’ dining chairs which we are currently restoring. These chairs were made with stream bent plywood backs, and a lovely curved crossrail detail to the legs.

The chairs are stamped ’21 Mar 1969′ making these chairs 43 years old! They are in really good condition despite their age, as they had been kept in storage for quite some time. From what I can find out, these chairs were manufactured by Benchairs (Western) Limited who were based in Frome, Somerset. The company closed in 1991. I believe their company slogan was ‘furniture that takes some beating’. I would love to find out more about this company in the future as their chairs are pretty marvellous!

We have removed all the vinyl covers and stripped the old foams which were fixed to the backs and seat pads. We will replace this with new foam.

We noticed that each chair looked a little different in how the joints were constructed – although the overall finished look is the same. However, upon stripping the last chair we found the word ‘SAMPLE’ written on the underside. So… are they the original prototypes for the models going forward? We will never know but we feel this makes them all the more special and we thought this was quite a find!

We are going to recover these chairs in a leather and fabric. Below are some of the pictures to show the stripped down version before we restore them! (We restored a set last year – see picture at the end).

Project of the week! G Plan Swivel Chair

Our long-awaited G Plan swivel chair has now been lovingly restored!G Plan Swivel Wing Chair Model 6250

With its rock and swivel action this chair has been described as ‘The most comfortable chair in the world’. This is a rare opportunity to acquire a truly unique version of the chair made famous by Ernst Stavro Blofeld in the Classic Bond Films. The original model number of this chair is 6250.

When we first acquired this chair, it was in a very sorry state. The original orange vinyl was faded, and split in places. The seat webbing had deteriorated and it was a little moldy. However, here at Florrie+Bill we look past the rips, tears and garish fabrics and see a stunning piece of British Furniture design awaiting to shine once more.

We thought about how we would reupholster this chair a great deal. We deliberated many times over the fabrics, leathers and colour choices – it really has been a project of devotion! The one thing that we wanted to create was a piece of furniture that was unquestionably unique.

When we saw the completed chair (sat proudly in our living room) we fell in love with it ourselves!

We settled on covering this stunning chair in sand coloured full aniline leather from Halo, teamed with stunning Andrew Martin ‘Concourse’ fabric. The leather used is hand finished to show all the patina, warts and all – which will age beautifully with use.

The luxurious deep buttoned back has been contrasted with Concourse fabric covered buttons to bring the chair bang on trend.

We have retained the original tilt and rocker swivel base, which ensures that the chair maintains its original sit. We gave this a good clean up to find all the show wood in perfect condition.

As a finishing touch we have also hand stitched the original G Plan (Ebenezer Gomme) label to the seat platform, to retain the authenticity of this product. This label was previously salvaged from the lining cloth on the underside of the chair.

This chair is a definite statement piece, and you will not find another like this!

1960’s Rockers – Client Recover

We were approached by a client to recover a pair of 1960′s rocking chairs which had been inherited from an Aunt. She had seen our recovered Benchairs on our Facebook page, and was keen to turn the rockers into something special.

After an initial consultation, we decided that we were to keep to a colour scheme to compliment her existing sofa, and use the Andrew Martin Concourse fabric.

We covered the backs of the chairs in the Concourse fabric, and covered the seat cushion in a gold bouclé fabric. We contrast piped the edges of the seat cushion in the Concourse and put in a couple of buttons to add interest.

We added new foam interiors to the seats and also replaced the original Pirelli webbing.

Aside from a good clean up, we left the chair frames as they were to retain the patina.

The chairs looked great back in place in the clients living room and are sure to be a talking point. It’s also nice to know the chairs will be enjoyed for many more years to come in our clients family, now the chairs have a new lease of life.
